Sedation Options at Better Smiles
Inhalation Sedation (Happy Gas)
Also known as nitrous oxide, this is a mild form of sedation delivered through a small nose mask. It creates a relaxed, light-headed feeling and wears off quickly, allowing most patients to resume normal activities shortly after treatment.
Ideal for:
- Mild to moderate dental anxiety
- Children or adults with a mild gag reflex
- Shorter procedures
Sleep Dentistry (IV Sedation)
Also referred to as twilight sedation, this is administered by a qualified sedationist via intravenous line. Patients remain conscious but deeply relaxed, often with little to no memory of the procedure. This option is performed safely in our clinic in collaboration with experienced medical sedation providers.
Ideal for:
- Moderate to severe dental anxiety
- Complex surgical or multi-step procedures
- Those requiring multiple treatments in one visit

Frequently Asked Questions
Not everyone is a candidate for sedation. Your medical history, current medications, and overall health will be assessed before any form of sedation is recommended. We’ll always ensure that any sedation method used is appropriate and safe for your specific circumstances.
With IV sedation (also known as twilight sedation), you are not fully unconscious but enter a deeply relaxed state and may have little to no memory of the procedure. Inhalation sedation (happy gas) creates a lighter sense of calm and awareness. General anaesthesia is not performed at our clinic and is typically reserved for hospital-based procedures.
Inhalation sedation (happy gas) wears off within minutes after treatment ends, and most patients can safely leave the clinic shortly afterward. IV sedation has a longer recovery time, and you will need someone to accompany you and monitor you for the rest of the day.
No. If you’ve had IV sedation, you must not drive, operate machinery, or make legal decisions for the remainder of the day. You’ll need someone to escort you home and stay with you until the sedation wears off fully. If you’ve had only inhalation sedation, driving may be possible, but we will advise you based on your individual response.
No. Sedation helps you feel calm and relaxed, but local anaesthetic is still used to numb the area being treated. This ensures you remain comfortable and free from pain throughout the procedure.
Sedation is available for many procedures and is particularly helpful for anxious patients or longer treatments. Your dentist will discuss whether sedation is suitable based on your needs and the complexity of your procedure. Not all appointments require sedation, but we’re always happy to discuss your options.
